OUR DESIGN PROCESS

Designing the Carbon Cycle in Minecraft: Education Edition

Coding NPC's and command blocks.

  • NPC's used to provide information and/or instruction.

  • Command blocks for students to interact using buttons, levers, or pressure plates.

    • Leads to an action: teleportation, gives them an object, move a block, etc.

STUDENT DESIGN PROCESS

Guiding quote: “Engineering tasks should be selected and designed so that students have engaged physically – and that they are made aware of how these expectations relate to scientific and engineering concepts” (Davis et al., 2019, p. 78)

Students will walk through each stage and complete a task based on what they have learnt e.g., complete building part of the stage

Students will also understand how they can take these learnings home and make changes in their daily lives to help reduce their carbon footprint.

ASKING

Students are asked to consider what climate change is and how it affects their day-to-day lives. Here is a recent and relevant video that can be used to introduce the topic to students:

IMAGINING

Students are provided with a visual representation of the carbon cycle and are given the opportunity to explore what occurs at each stage of the cycle.

PLANNING

As students go through the activities, they will start to plan what their ideal world would look like, while considering what impact it will have on climate change based on what they are learning.

CREATING

Students will get into groups and participate in a building activity where they can create an ideal world with houses, plants and animals while using what they learnt from all prior activities.

TESTING

After the building activity, students will get to review what all the groups have made as well as analyze their creations against the Carbon Footprint Calculator to see how effective they would be.

IMPROVING

Students will take what they have learned from this Minecraft World and apply it to their real lives. They will make changes to their daily routines to work on reducing their carbon footprint.
